“You want to wipe that dopey smile off your face before I do it for you?” Kendrix growls.

“Cliché, dude. You couldn’t come up with anything better?” I taunt. Kendrix is in a foul mood and he’s taking it out on his imaginary opponent, i.e. me, on the other side of the punch mitts. Better that than your face. Touché.

“Just hold the fucking mitts up, douche bag.” He glares at me and I suck my lips in to hide my smile.

After another half hour of beating the shit out of me (figuratively speaking), I call a halt to the session. “You want to tell me what’s got you so worked up?” I ask with a raised brow.

“The opposite of your fucking smile, I’d guess,” he mutters stiffly. A light comes on in my mind.

“Something happened with you and Fate,” I surmise.

Kendrix’s scowl gets darker and he throws a right hook that almost knocks me off balance, before dropping his arms and blowing out a harsh breath.

“It was mutual,” he mutters.

I raise an eyebrow at that. “So, what’s with the attitude. You regretting it?”

Kendrix shakes his head, removing his gloves and tossing them to the side. He grabs a bottle of water and takes a long swallow. “It was time. We both knew it would end. My assignment just doesn’t—” He breaks off suddenly and looks away. “Anyway, we were just using each other to blow off physical steam. Neither of us is looking to be tied down to a relationship, or worse, the one we’re fated with.”

I know I’m standing there and staring like an idiot, but my mind is spinning at these revelations. Kendrix has always been laid back, quieter than me, but he’s never been particularly cynical. He doesn’t want to be tied down, find the love of his life? One more thing I didn’t know about my twin. I don’t know when it happened, but I’m starting to realize that I don’t know my brother anymore. And, what’s this about an assignment…?

I’m sure my questions are displayed on my face. “Don’t worry about it,” he speaks before I can get a word in, “It’s nothing I can’t handle. It’s just going to be a challenge caring for this new charge.” Something in his tone bothers me, but I know he isn’t lying. His eyes slide away again and he stares out the glass wall of the training room, watching the students working out in the training fields. “This job—” His gaze returns to mine and once again I’m floored by what I see. Kendrix’s eyes are dark blue, a broken sorrow filling them. He looks defeated, “It just, it asks a lot of us, you know? Sometimes, I’m just so fucking tired of it.”

For a moment I wonder if he’s been given the same assignment as me. I quickly discard it, though. Fate would have no reason to keep that from us, if anything, it might have helped to have that support.

I watch as he wipes away his emotion and his face becomes blank, clearly done with this conversation.
